Headquarters move sees Veitchi Group return to its Clydeside roots

Relocation from Rutherglen’s Bouverie Street follows a strong set of financial results

One of Scotland’s oldest and largest construction industry sub-contractors, the Veitchi Group, is relocating its headquarters to the banks of the Clyde in what is a major boost to the area.

The move away from their four buildings in Rutherglen’s Bouverie Street, where they have been for the last 50 years, marks a return to Clydeside where the company first originated.

The firm, incorporated in 1917, has acquired a 20,000 sq ft building at the Gateway Glasgow development in Cambuslang.  They will make their move to the new premises this weekend.

“We’re pleased to be bringing jobs, employment and invesment to the area at a time when there is the threat of more reduncies, particularly in the ship building industry,” explains Veitchi Group’s managing director, Jim Preston.

“Our new headquarters are a prudent acquisition by the Group allowing us to consolidate the Head Office and four Veitchi business divisions, whilst also giving us room for future expansion.”

Meanwhile, earlier this month at its 99th AGM, the Group revealed a strong set of financial results.  In the year to 30th November 2015 profits before tax grew by 26% with turnover reaching £37m.

Mr Preston says profits are up due to the Group’s growing geographical orderbook and its burgeoning Metframe business. Veitchi is one of only four companies in the UK licensed to use the very popular pre-panelised building system, suitable for constructing hotels, offices, student accommodation and flatted developments up to eleven storeys in height.

“This is an excellent set of results, which highlights the Group’s strength in depth in a demanding market place,” commented group financial director, James Stewart.

“Our staff are our greatest asset and their commitment and skill is the key to our success.”

The business currently employs 320 staff with half of those numbers attributable to  Richardson and Starling, Scotland’s largest and oldest building preservation company.

  • The Veitchi Group will turn 100 years old on 20th March 2017. It is privately owned with 70 shareholders, who are predominantly current employees, past employees, and their descendants.
  • Spread across 12 offices the business divisions within the Group are: Richardson and Starling, Veitchi Interiors, Veitchi Flooring and Veitchi Industrial Flooring.
  • Veitchi Homes, meanwhile, is a niche house builder operating in the north east of Scotland where it has succesfully created several developments.
  • The Group has recently been involved in some high profile projects including Glasgow’s SSE Hydro, Edinburgh’s Signet Library, Motherwell College Dance Studio and Birmingham Library.

FeRFA’s first Scottish apprentices gain their qualifications

The first apprentices to join the FeRFA scheme in Scotland have been awarded their SVQ2 In Situ Flooring – Resin following two years of training both on and off-site.

The scheme was set up to meet the training needs of our Scottish members, and thanks to the commitment of contractor members Industrial Floor Treatments of East Kilbride and Veitchi Industrial Flooring in Rutherglen, seven candidates were registered on the scheme.

As a pilot scheme, it posed many challenges in terms of logistics and the delivery of the practical training sessions.  Having no bespoke training facilities in Scotland, we were able to use the premises, plant and equipment of both Industrial Floor Treatments and Veitchi to run the courses, and thanks to FeRFA manufacturers, resin flooring and screeding materials were freely supplied and delivered to the training venues.

Our congratulations go to Kieran Docherty, John McIntosh, Gordon Monteith and Graeme Stewart from Industrial Floor Treatments and Kieron Taney, Robert Wilson and Stewart Reid from Veitchi Ltd on the achievement of their SVQ Level 2 Insitu Resin Flooring, and we look forward to formally presenting them with their awards at the FeRFA Awards Dinner on 15th November 2013 at The Belfry, together with the other FeRFA apprentices who have graduated this year.

FeRFA’s apprenticeship scheme is delivered with the assistance of the CITB who support employers with grants to cover the cost of training.

FeRFA will be launching their next scheme – the twelfth –  in England on 8 and 9 October.  More details on this and other training matters can be found on www.ferfa.org.uk/training.php

New Chair for Scottish home building industry body

Home building industry body Homes for Scotland, which represents companies providing 95% of new homes built for sale as well as a significant proportion of affordable housing, has elected Jim Preston, Group Managing Director of Veitchi Group, as Chairman for the next 12 months.

Preston (48), who has been in construction and house building for the entire 28 years of his career, first joined the organisation’s Board five years ago and served as Vice Chair for the 2012-13 term.

A quantity surveyor by profession, his management roles have spanned commercial, technical, special projects, Managing Director and Group Managing Director / Chief Executive.

Having previously worked for such companies as Balfour Beatty Construction, CALA Homes, Persimmon Homes and Carronvale Group, his breadth of experience encompasses everything from the small private company to the large PLC, including multi-disciplined construction groups.

As well as leading the ongoing drive for a predictable and proportionate planning system which recognises the financial pressures facing builders, a key area of focus for Preston during his tenure will be continuing to ensure that the needs of smaller and medium sized home builders are fully represented as he believes this is where the impact of the downturn has been felt deepest in terms of funding.

Preston has also urged the Scottish Government to carefully consider the consequences of increasing energy standards on already highly efficient new homes, saying that it is wrong to make home building more expensive and home ownership less affordable at a time when 160,000 people are on waiting lists and housing output has slumped to its lowest level in 70 years.

More Home for your Money at Hillside Lane, Portlethen

Veitchi Homes are not your average developer of new homes. The company seeks out small pockets of land which are ripe for development into just a few homes, and therefore aimed at those who appreciate privacy. They then design homes which suit the plot and complement the surroundings. “Hillside Lane” at Hillside in Portlethen is a prime example of this type of location.

Raymond Tedeschi, Managing Director of Veitchi Homes explains, “We seek out what we describe as “hidden gems” – those small, exclusive locations which the big companies do not consider.” This means Veitchi can offer something different from the norm. “We can offer a viable alternative to homebuyers – something that bit more exclusive yet with all the benefits of a new home, including high specification, modern materials and traditional design. And of course the 10 year NHBC guarantee.”

The “Hidden Gem”
Situated within the village of Hillside, adjacent to Portlethen, this exclusive, small development of just three homes nestles within a desirable spot in an established location. It certainly lives up to the “hidden gem” profile. It is here that the company has developed a small pocket of land into three “Birch” style family homes.

Spacious Homes
The “Birch” is a 4 bedroom home which extends to 1720 square feet in size. The ground floor accommodation is exceptionally spacious and offers highly versatile family accommodation. The separate entrance vestibule leads to an open hallway with access to a family shower room. The well proportioned living room is over 5 metres long and features a large bay window to the front of the house. The kitchen / breakfasting / family area is on open plan and stretches 7.7 metres across the back of the property. This versatile and practical space features French doors which open onto the fully landscaped back garden. A separate utility room which is accessed from the kitchen also opens onto the back garden, as well as providing internal access to the garage / workshop area from inside the house.

The ground floor accommodation is completed by a generously proportioned dining room. With both the living room and family kitchen offering ample space for a large dining table, this room offers flexible accommodation. The space could be used for an additional bedroom (with convenient access to the ground floor shower room) or alternatively as a study or playroom.

The one and a half storey design of the “Birch” housetype is in keeping with the surrounding properties in the village of Hillside. This allows the upper floor “coombs” to offer a quirky design feature not present in many standard new build homes. The oak finished balusters and staircase lead upstairs to an extremely spacious upper landing which in turn leads to the four bedrooms. The well proportioned master bedroom benefits from two double wardrobes with high quality oak veneer doors, which match the internal pass doors throughout the property.

An ensuite shower room completes the accommodation within the main bathroom and is completed to a high standard, to include a full height heated towel rail and ample vanity units.

Bedrooms 2 and 3 are both double bedrooms and feature built-in double wardrobes as standard. Bedroom 4 is a single bedroom to the front of the property which offers flexible accommodation to suit the needs of a growing family. The family bathroom offers another touch of luxury, with a large, deep corner bath designed around the coomb feature. As with the en suite shower room, the main family bathroom has ample vanity storage and includes a full height heated towel rail.

All bathrooms, the kitchen and utility room are supplied by local company “Laings of Inverurie” and have been custom designed for Veitchi Homes with family living in mind. Indeed, Veitchi Homes have spent time considering how families use their home, and have included ample storage within the property, both upstairs and downstairs. Raymond explains “Cupboard space is something which can be in limited supply in some new build homes. For us, it’s important that a family sized home includes family sized storage areas and we think we have provided this at “Hillside Lane””. The internal accommodation is finished with high quality floor coverings throughout, which is included in the price of the home.

Landscaped Gardens
The lane on which the homes are situated is approached from the left, and leads to three homes which are well spaced on deceptively broad plots. The three homes also benefit from turfed back gardens and 1.8 metre privacy fencing, which some house builders in the area are offering as an extra item.

More Home for your Money
We think we have the best value new build homes available for sale in the Portlethen area at the moment. In addition to floor coverings and landscaped back gardens, Veitchi Homes can offer a range of financial incentives which are designed to get you moving. If we consider the floor area of the home, which extends to 1720 square feet, the quality of finish and incentives available, we believe that we have a home which represents excellent value for money.

But please don’t take our word for it – visit our new view home at Hillside Lane to see for yourself the quality of finish and spacious accommodation. The “Birch” view home is open at weekends from 11am – 4pm. The homes are priced from £372,500 and are available for early entry.

Hillside Lane is nestled on the right hand side of Hillside Road, on the approach to the well-known Coull Cars garage, so is easy to find. Alternatively, call (01224) 893939, Monday to Friday for further information or to arrange a viewing by appointment.

Another Success for Property Repair Network

Property Repair Network secures work with Gala Casinos.

Property Repair Network, one of the Veitchi Group companies, continues to make inroads into the hospitality and leisure sector as it develops its maintenance services division.

Building on their existing relationship with Gala bingo, PRN are now undertaking works for Gala casinos around Scotland. The scope of these works encompasses both planned and reactive maintenance, which is undertaken by our quick-response multi trade, skilled specialists.

Gareth Bland, Director of PRN explains “We are delighted to have secured this additional work with Gala casinos. This has been secured on the strength of our ongoing, successful relationship with their bingo business and is an endorsement of the service we provide.”

The work, which covers a total of 6 casinos: one each in Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh, and three in Glasgow – including the flagship Glassford Street venue – brings the value of business undertaken for the Gala group to almost £1million.

This new success follows on from the recent news that PRN have secured a new 3 year quickresponse repair contract with Fujitsu. And the company intends to build on its recent success by
increasing its presence within the retail sector.

Gareth continues, “The PRN business is following a pattern of sector targeting in line with other Veitchi Group companies. Our company mission statement includes “strength through diversity”. By harnessing the complimentary skill sets of our sister companies, we are able to provide a one-stop shop for our clients in the commercial refit market.”

Property Repair Network is one of the Veitchi Group of companies. Originally founded in 1917, the Group comprises Veitchi Flooring, Veitchi Industrial Flooring, Veitchi Interiors, Richardson and Starling, Property Repair Network and Veitchi Homes. The companies work together across a range of sectors including commercial, education, hospitality and leisure, retail, health and public and community. New Show Home for Veitchi Homes at Hillside Lane, Portlethen

Veitchi Homes are delighted to announce the opening of their first show home at Hillside Lane, Portlethen.

The “Birch” 4 bedroom detached home showcases the quality of finish and product specification which Veitchi build in as standard. The generous ground floor accommodation includes a large living room with feature bay window, an extremely spacious kitchen/family/dining room with doors to the landscaped back garden, utility room and separate dining room. This room could equally be used as a guest bedroom, as the ground floor accommodation is completed with a shower room.

Upstairs, there are four bedrooms which are accessed from the large, open upper landing. Three of them are double bedrooms with fitted wardrobes as standard. The show home has been professionally dressed by Eileen Kesson of Envision Interiors. Eileen has used a striking and contemporary palette of blues and gold which enhance the interior layout and features of the “Birch” house style. The property has to be seen to fully appreciate the accommodation on offer – but please don’t take our word for it. Visit our new show home at Hillside Lane to see for yourself the quality of finish and spacious accommodation. The new “Birch” show home is open at weekends from 11am – 4pm, or by appointment. The three homes on the development are priced from £372,500 and are available for early entry.

Hidden Gems across the North East
Veitchi Homes are not your average developer of new homes. The company seeks out small pockets of land which are ripe for development into just a few homes, and therefore aimed at those who appreciate something a little more exclusive. Construction is underway on only four large ranch-style homes at Rosebank in Kirkton of Maryculter, where first completions are expected in Autumn 2013.

Veitchi build a diverse range of home styles. Just three contemporary 2 bedroom apartments are underway at Fonthill Gate on Fonthill Road and they will benefit from under croft parking – which is a real boost in a popular west end location. The company’s current developments are completed by one 4/5 bedroom luxury detached home at Juniper Gardens in Oyne and Rothney Gardens in Insch, where only one cottage apartment and one semi-detached home remain available.

In certain locations, Veitchi Homes are currently offering a range of incentives designed to get you moving. For more information or to arrange a viewing, please contact (01224) 893939, visit our new showhome at Hillside Lane on Saturday or Sunday from 11am – 4pm, or visit www.veitchigroup.pipeten.co.uk/
