Relocation from Rutherglen’s Bouverie Street follows a strong set of financial results
One of Scotland’s oldest and largest construction industry sub-contractors, the Veitchi Group, is relocating its headquarters to the banks of the Clyde in what is a major boost to the area.
The move away from their four buildings in Rutherglen’s Bouverie Street, where they have been for the last 50 years, marks a return to Clydeside where the company first originated.
The firm, incorporated in 1917, has acquired a 20,000 sq ft building at the Gateway Glasgow development in Cambuslang. They will make their move to the new premises this weekend.
“We’re pleased to be bringing jobs, employment and invesment to the area at a time when there is the threat of more reduncies, particularly in the ship building industry,” explains Veitchi Group’s managing director, Jim Preston.
“Our new headquarters are a prudent acquisition by the Group allowing us to consolidate the Head Office and four Veitchi business divisions, whilst also giving us room for future expansion.”
Meanwhile, earlier this month at its 99th AGM, the Group revealed a strong set of financial results. In the year to 30th November 2015 profits before tax grew by 26% with turnover reaching £37m.
Mr Preston says profits are up due to the Group’s growing geographical orderbook and its burgeoning Metframe business. Veitchi is one of only four companies in the UK licensed to use the very popular pre-panelised building system, suitable for constructing hotels, offices, student accommodation and flatted developments up to eleven storeys in height.
“This is an excellent set of results, which highlights the Group’s strength in depth in a demanding market place,” commented group financial director, James Stewart.
“Our staff are our greatest asset and their commitment and skill is the key to our success.”
The business currently employs 320 staff with half of those numbers attributable to Richardson and Starling, Scotland’s largest and oldest building preservation company.
The first apprentices to join the FeRFA scheme in Scotland have been awarded their SVQ2 In Situ Flooring – Resin following two years of training both on and off-site.
The scheme was set up to meet the training needs of our Scottish members, and thanks to the commitment of contractor members Industrial Floor Treatments of East Kilbride and Veitchi Industrial Flooring in Rutherglen, seven candidates were registered on the scheme.
As a pilot scheme, it posed many challenges in terms of logistics and the delivery of the practical training sessions. Having no bespoke training facilities in Scotland, we were able to use the premises, plant and equipment of both Industrial Floor Treatments and Veitchi to run the courses, and thanks to FeRFA manufacturers, resin flooring and screeding materials were freely supplied and delivered to the training venues.
Our congratulations go to Kieran Docherty, John McIntosh, Gordon Monteith and Graeme Stewart from Industrial Floor Treatments and Kieron Taney, Robert Wilson and Stewart Reid from Veitchi Ltd on the achievement of their SVQ Level 2 Insitu Resin Flooring, and we look forward to formally presenting them with their awards at the FeRFA Awards Dinner on 15th November 2013 at The Belfry, together with the other FeRFA apprentices who have graduated this year.

Home building industry body Homes for Scotland, which represents companies providing 95% of new homes built for sale as well as a significant proportion of affordable housing, has elected Jim Preston, Group Managing Director of Veitchi Group, as Chairman for the next 12 months.
Preston (48), who has been in construction and house building for the entire 28 years of his career, first joined the organisation’s Board five years ago and served as Vice Chair for the 2012-13 term.
A quantity surveyor by profession, his management roles have spanned commercial, technical, special projects, Managing Director and Group Managing Director / Chief Executive.
Having previously worked for such companies as Balfour Beatty Construction, CALA Homes, Persimmon Homes and Carronvale Group, his breadth of experience encompasses everything from the small private company to the large PLC, including multi-disciplined construction groups.
As well as leading the ongoing drive for a predictable and proportionate planning system which recognises the financial pressures facing builders, a key area of focus for Preston during his tenure will be continuing to ensure that the needs of smaller and medium sized home builders are fully represented as he believes this is where the impact of the downturn has been felt deepest in terms of funding.
Preston has also urged the Scottish Government to carefully consider the consequences of increasing energy standards on already highly efficient new homes, saying that it is wrong to make home building more expensive and home ownership less affordable at a time when 160,000 people are on waiting lists and housing output has slumped to its lowest level in 70 years.
